Things To Do

Galloway has an excellent network of quiet rural roads to discover. Enjoy a few days of stress free touring. Follow one of the signposted trails, or, invent your own using maps and guides which are available at the tourist information centres.

The Solway Coast Heritage Trail

This 190 mile route takes you through the beautiful scenery of the Solway coast to the Mull of Galloway, historic monuments, ruined castles, abbeys. Flourishing gardens and fascinating museums , not to mention a host of charming villages and towns in which to stop off for refreshments, stretching your legs or a spot of shopping.

 

There's Wildlife Everywhere

Galloway is a sanctuary for wildlife. Look out for red deer, wild goats, birds of prey, otters, red squirrels and of course the distinctive striped Belted Galloway cattle, fondly known as 'Belties' by the locals.

Cycling

There is an excellent choice of routes both on and off road right across the region.
The National Cycle Byway has 467 miles of route in Dumfries and Galloway- 115 miles of this will be manageable loops, so that you can take it one day at a time.
Gatehouse of Fleet is on Route 7.

 

Walking

Tackle challenging ranges and summits. Merrick (2764 ft). Cairnsmore of Fleet (2329 ft ) the Rhinns of Kells takes in three summits (2280 ft, 2668 ft and 2446 ft) There are also smaller hills for the less energetic from 1800 ft down to 1000 ft, or, if you prefer, there are lots of woodland or coastal trail paths to enjoy. Or why not join one of the fascinating countryside Ranger guided walks.

Golf

With over 30 golf clubs ready to welcome you and share with you some of the great range of parkland or coastal links at championship or holiday fun level. Whilst taking in some delightful scenery. Now it's even easier to organise a golf holiday as there is a Gateway to Golf pass, which gives you discounted golf on up to 10 courses over three or five days. 'Bird-watchers' Paradise

Dumfries and Galloway provides so many excellent quality habitats. There is great bird-watching at any time of year. The Solway is one of the most important estuaries in Britain with up to 40,000 wildfowl and 83,000 waders resident during the winter period. Copies of the local RSPB bird walks are available from the tourist information centres.
